365 Days of Parkour

I ACTUALLY did this. I ACTUALLY made it all the way through 365 consecutive days of parkour training without stopping. It wasn’t always very >good< training, and I definitely feel I phoned some days in when things got dire, but I DID do it. Guys, I’m genuinely astonished by this. I know I keep bringing it up, but I’m not sure any of you really realize how dramatically unprecedented all of this is for me. It had literally never crossed my mind to do something like this before. Ever. In the whole 34 years of my life leading up to my decision to do this last year, it never once occurred to me that I might be capable of intentionally, and relentlessly practicing one thing every day for an entire year. Especially not something athletic.

But wait! There’s more! I’M DOING IT AGAIN! Continue reading “365 Days of Parkour”

We Are Not Gymnastics

This has taken me an absurd amount of time to get done. I’ve been hemming and hawing over this post since November and it’s most of the reason there haven’t been any other posts since then either. My struggle has gone from ‘I’m so angry about this I can’t even find words’, to ‘I’d like to contribute to this conversation, but don’t know how’, to ‘Why am I even bothering to write this? It’s not like it’ll actually make a difference.’ And that’s where I’m still stuck now, to be honest. I’ve struggled to figure out what the actual purpose of this post is and have felt that it might not be worth publishing if I can’t figure that out. I understand that I’m probably preaching to the choir here, and that my words are very unlikely to have any productive effect, but maybe someone out there who does have more of a voice on the matter will see this and find it somehow useful.

So, here’s what’s going on…. Continue reading “We Are Not Gymnastics”

Eye of the Beholder

I had two unexpected experiences today that have left me feeling a little inspired to share.  Two totally different people, at different locations, came up to me and chose to share their impressions.  The first person approached me while I was warming up a little bit, waiting for a friend. I wasn’t doing anything particularly ‘interesting’, but she asked me if I’m able and willing to do personal training because – to put it the way she put it – she wanted to ‘look like me’.  ‘Strong, and fit’. Sadly, I’m nowhere near having any of the necessary credentials for something like that, but I was really surprised and – yes – flattered by her honesty.  I pointed her in the right direction for finding someone who *can* help her achieve her goals, and we parted ways.

Tell Me What Moves You

I run on music.  I’ve almost always got music playing and really need it to help get me through the day.  I have a pretty wide taste in music, though, and generally listen by mood. I like to choose my music based on what I’m doing, or how I’m feeling, or – sometimes – how I’d like to be feeling.  It probably stands to reason, then, that I also really like creating playlists for things. Below you’ll find a running list of some of my favorite songs for training parkour, along with a YouTube link.  Continue reading “Tell Me What Moves You”

Join me on a journey?

*waves* Welcome!

If you’re reading this, you’ve stumbled – intentionally or otherwise – upon my latest writing project.  I’ve run a number of blogs in the past, but this is a dramatically new direction for me. If you hadn’t noticed yet, this blog is meant to provide a place for me to process and share my thoughts and experiences as I journey through training parkour and historical rapier combat.  Yeah. I know that’s an odd combination. But that’s my life. I like sharp, pointy things and climbing on stuff. When I’m not climbing buildings, or stabbing my friends, I’m also real fond of cross stitch, video games, and reading. I’ve been practicing late Medieval rapier combat (as interpreted by the Society for Creative Anachronism) for roughly five years, and parkour for a little over a year and a half.
